Fighting cholesterol with Phytosterols

New Phytosterols capsules from Power Health contain the same active ingredient found in the new margarines, spreads and yoghurt drinks aimed at lowering cholesterol levels.
Phytosterols (plant sterols) occur naturally in small amounts in certain plant materials such as nuts, grains, seeds and leaves and vegetable oils. They appear to work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine so that a certain amount will simply pass out of the body. A normal persons daily intake of phytosterols from food is not sufficient to have any significant effect on cholesterol absorption.
Taking phytosterols in the form of capsules is simple and convenient and requires no change to the regular food-shopping list.
Phytosterols capsules can be taken as well as cholesterol lowering spreads etc.* and studies have also shown that phytosterols appear to enhance the effects of the cholesterol lowering drugs statins.
Power Health Phytosterols capsules are suitable for vegetarians and vegans & contain on average 400mg of phytosterols per capsule. Available in pots of 60 (1 months supply at 2 capsules a day).

Royalty Calls on Power Health

His Royal Highness the Duke of York was a surprise visitor to the Power Health stand at Arab Health 2006 at the end of January. Power Health MD Vicky McIver and Export Manager Helen Whilesmith, were pleasantly surprised to receive the VIP onto the stand and Prince Andrew appeared genuinely interested as he discussed the companies product range with them for several minutes. Over 2000 companies from over 50 countries exhibited at Arab Health this year, with the aim of forging business relationships with the Middle East. Several organisations expressed interest in developing trade with Power Health, so it appears that the company will expand on its number of already successful export partnerships in this region of the globe.

Remote Thai village gets fresh water with help from Power Health

At the end of 2005, a team of volunteers from the Karen Hilltribes Trust, built a fresh water system for the inhabitants of the remote village of Ban Hua Laem in north west Thailand. The money required to fund this system was provided by Power Health, and as a result, 240 people now have the benefit of clean water and the prospect of no more typhoid. Trust director, Penelope Worsley says "Once the village has clean water, we find the improved health gives them the encouragement to make other things possible, such as the ability to get to school and the chance to raise income from higher productivity". The Trust has been working to improve conditions for the Karen Hilltribes of Thailand for 5 years, concentrating on areas such as installing water supplies, increasing access to education and supplying emergency equipment in response to natural disasters, for example the devastating storms September brought to the Mae Hong Son province. Power Health MD Vicky McIver says "I am proud that we have been able to contribute to a project that will make such a huge difference to these people". Testofen: A new male supplement

Studies on fenuside, a newly identified component of the herb fenugreek, have demonstrated it has the ability to boost male hormone levels. It raises the level of testosterone and also acts like testosterone, by binding to the testosterone receptor sites and creating testosterone like activity. Comparative studies with sildenafil citrate show it has an equivalent libido enhancing effect. Fenuside also appears to have an effect on increasing lean muscle mass, which gives it potential applications as a sports supplement.
Power Health has now launched Testofen, a new adult male supplement containing 300mg fenugreek extract with a 50% fenuside content.

Phase out carbs with Phase 2®

Power Health is pleased to announce the introduction of Phase 2®. Phase 2® is the new, smart way to reduce calorie intake, for fans of starchy foods like potatoes, rice, pasta and bread.

Phase 2® provides phaseolamin, a natural substance derived from the white kidney bean, which acts to neutralise the enzymes responsible for the digestion of carbohydrates, thereby reducing the availability of calories from starch-based foods.

Phase 2® works in the intestine by temporarily inhibiting the digestive enzyme alpha amylase, before it can convert starch into glucose and then fat. As a result, fewer starch calories are absorbed from each meal.
This carbohydrate neutralising effect may be of particular benefit to those struggling with both obesity and diabetes.

School Trial Highlights Benefits of Omega 3

A recent trial at Power Health's local school, Pocklington Community Junior, demonstrated just how effective Omega 3 supplementation can be at improving childrens learning potential.

86 children varying in age from 7 to 11 years old, were supplied with Power Health Strawberry Flavoured Omega 3 Liquid. Parents assessed their children on five different criteria: reading, writing, concentration, behaviour and co-ordination, at monthly intervals over a 3 month period.

A significant number of the parents who returned assessment forms to Power Health reported a positive change in their children for most or all of the above criteria. The most noticeable change was in concentration, with 50% showing an improvement in concentration skills after just one month. High levels of improvement were also noted in the other areas too: reading 44%, writing 44%, behaviour 38% & co-ordination 27%.
Although the trial was conducted as an informal educational exercise with the parents of the local school and not subject to rigorous scientific controls, the results are still impressive and re-enforce the rising bank of data on the health benefits of Omega 3 supplementation.

Power Health would like to thank the parents and pupils of Pocklington Community Junior School on their help and participation with this study.

New Pregnancy Multivitamin & Mineral with Digestion "Friendly" Iron

Power Health is pleased to announce the launch of a new Multivitamin and Mineral supplement especially designed for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Women’s bodies require different amounts of various vitamins and minerals at this time compared to normal and many doctors and midwives now recommend the taking of suitable supplements. For example, the daily requirement for iron doubles from 15mg to 30mg towards the end of pregnancy, and folic acid is recommended at levels of 400mcg prior to conception and for the first 12 weeks thereafter.

To provide for these changing nutritional needs through diet alone can be challenging, especially taking morning sickness and suddenly faddy taste buds into account. Taking a standard multivitamin and mineral moreover is not an ideal solution, these routinely contain Vitamin A, which experts advise pregnant women to avoid in supplementary levels, and the quantities of other vitamins and minerals are unlikely to have been optimised to those levels required in pregnancy.

Pregnancy is also well known for adversely affecting the digestive system, heartburn, nausea and constipation being prime examples. Unfortunately, commonly used iron preparations used in supplements can aggravate or even cause similar symptoms. In an effort to keep such unwanted effects to a minimum, Power Health has used a new form of iron, iron protein succinylate. This preparation is designed not to be absorbed until it reaches the intestine and studies* have shown that the resultant levels of digestive upset compared to other forms of iron, are significantly reduced as a result. To the company’s knowledge, no other pregnancy supplement on the market uses this form of iron or one with similar properties.

New Children's Omega 3 Liquid Gets The Thumbs Up for Taste

When Power Health was formulating its new Omega 3 Liquid, a range of different flavour samples were made up and tested by staff members' children. Sons, daughters, nieces, nephews and school friends all got involved and pronounced the winning flavour as strawberry.

The Omega 3 content of the liquid is provided by fish oil - not renowned for its great taste or appeal to kids, so the flavour had to be approved by children themselves. At the same time as improving the palatability, it was important to listen to parents and retailers concerns regarding additives, so the resultant liquid contains a low odour fish oil, natural flavouring and a touch of Vitamin E - that's all. No sugar, artificial sweeteners or additives.

An added benefit of keeping out the additives, is the high Omega 3 content. One 5ml serving provides 825mg EPA and 550mg DHA - levels which Power Health believe are amongst the highest on the market.

Take A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Memory LaneTM capsules from Power Health provide 100mg of the important brain nutrient phosphatidylserine (PS). In humans, PS forms a major constituent of brain and nerve cells and is essential for neuronal signalling. As we get older, changes in the composition of these cells in the part of the brain called the hippocampus, lead to a reduction in the amount of information we can store and consequent memory loss.

Clinical studies over a period of 20 years have shown that regular supplementation with phosphatidylserine restores and maintains adequate nerve cell function in a variety of ways which leads to improvements in long term memory and long term recognition. Benefits can be seen in terms of enhanced memory, concentration and learning, making Memory LaneTM of use to a wide range of consumers including the maturing population, students and even sportsmen & women requiring increased concentration skills.

Phosphatidylserine is a natural component of our diet (in varying levels) and the PS in Memory LaneTM is derived from soy (non GMO), so is guaranteed BSE free. The safety of PS supplementation is well documented and there have been no reports of adverse interaction with other medications.

Snake Lane 2004

Nearly 700 runners converged on Pocklington on Sunday 22 February for the annual Snake Lane race, which follows a tortuous 10 mile route in the hills surrounding the town.
As a local company producing a range of health and sports supplements we thought we should get involved with this popular Pocklington event. So eight very cold Power Health staff were on hand in the blizzard conditions to distribute samples of our glucosamine gel (hoping to ease those stiff post race joints) and also give out "spot" prizes of £30 Power Health gift vouchers. MD Vicky McIver presented the vouchers at the awards ceremony following the race in the Rugby Club.
The fastest male on the day was Stephen Heppels (Lofthouse Athletic Club) 54 min 5 secs and the first woman back - breaking the previous course record by a whopping great 10 seconds with a time of 56 min 39 secs was Tracy Morris (Valley Striders)
Well done to all those who braved the elements and took part.
If you fancy running Snake Lane next year contact the Race Secretary c/o 8 Wheatlands Close, Pocklington, York or visit www.ukresults.net for an entry form.

Feed Your Cartilage

Certain sporting activities carry a high risk of cartilage damage, these include, Football, Dancing, Skiing, Martial Arts, Running and Rugby. Sports like these not only exert great pressure on specific joints e.g. the knee, but also lead to an increase in muscle mass, which results in stronger, heavier joint "levers" and additional joint strain. Cartilage damage is not always obvious, and symptoms may appear gradually - beginning as episodes of joint pain, inflammation, and lack of mobility. If left untreated however, such symptoms may over time develop into arthritis.

Glucosamine and Collagen Capsules from Power Health are used to aid the repair of damaged cartilage and the prevention of cartilage deterioration. As a preventative measure, courses lasting 2-3 months are often recommended, or as advised by a medical practitioner.

Collagen is a protein found in a number of tissues throughout the body, but particularly within and around the joints in the form of cartilage.

A small amount of collagen is present in the modern diet, but it passes straight through the system and is not well absorbed by the body. The collagen contained in the capsules has been hydrolysed, which means it has been broken down into short peptides, which can be easily absorbed by the body and used to nourish and repair joint cartilage.

Glucosamine is also present, as it is an aminomonosaccharide found in high concentrations in cartilage where it is an important precursor to glucosaminoglycans, which forms the matrix to which collagen binds.

Glucosamine and Collagen Capsules should be taken as a food supplement

Glucosamine and Collagen capsules 30s retail £9.99

Each contains on average:
Glucosamine Sulphate 2Kcl 500mg and Collagen 250mg.

Rutivite: Natures Aid to Blood Pressure and Circulatory Problems

Green Buckwheat is a plant grown primarily for its seeds, which are used for animal and human food. It contains high, naturally occurring levels of a substance called rutin, which is a flavonoid. Research* has shown that rutin in the commercially available form of Rutivite, helps blood vessels to become more flexible and stimulates blood flow, thereby helping to overcome the health problems associated with poor or damaged capillary circulation.

Taking rutin in the form of Rutivite tablets or Green Buckwheat Tea provides natural therapy for a variety of circulatory problems. These include varicose veins, purpura, hypertension, retinal haemorrhage and chilblains. For further details on the history, uses and benefits of rutin derived from green buckwheat, the book "The Magic of Green Buckwheat" is available for FREE.
